"Young Leader in the Community" is an initiative that Tuzla Community Foundation launched in November 2004. The main goal of the initiative is to support selforganizing activities of youngsters in local communities in Tuzla (MZs), especially communities that offer fewer activities for children from 9 to 14. In the initial phase the guiding idea was to connect project with primary schools, and later to transfer activities to community centres. After we started with only two local communities (Simin Han and Slavinovići), today, in 2009, there are nine active youth leadership sections in Tuzla, with more than 120 children involved. Through regular weekly workshops, young people have opportunity to learn about team work, different roles of a leader and team members, as well as how to fight against prejudices and discrimination. Besides the workshops, they have regular meetings, on which each section plan its activities and implement them independently from other sections. They also have joint activities on whcih they meet young mebers of other leadership sections within Tuzla communities.
All workshops are led by trained leaders, who are 16 – 20 years old, and have shown great motivation in other youth projects in Tuzla Community Foundation. They were chosen by voluntery contest, and they now share their knowledge, skills and motivation with younger children.
The project „Young Leader in the Community“ grew into the informal organisation called “A Smile for a Smile”, on September 12th 2008. On this day, 5 young selected representatives from each section participated in the , , by having tihe Annual Assembly with more then 50 members, children and young people age from 9 to 24. The project is realized on three basic principles: democracy, tolerance and equality. Through the project we also promote UN convention on children´s rights, especially its Article 31, that protects children right on free time, recreation and cultural activities.
